Storm Jerry Sparks Hazardous Surf Across Caribbean
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning on Friday, cautioning of perilous coastal conditions.
"Swells generated by Jerry are affecting the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," stated the center, based in Miami, Florida.
These wave surges are expected to spread throughout the remainder of the Greater Antilles over the next couple of nights, potentially exacerbating coastal hazards.
In addition to the surf conditions, intense rainfall is hitting several regions, including parts of the Leeward Islands, the British and US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
The National Hurricane Center warned that this heavy precipitation "could result in flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and in steep terrain."
According to the advisory, between 10 and 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) of rain are anticipated in Barbuda, while other parts of the Leeward and Virgin Islands are likely to see between 5 and 10 cm (2 to 4 inches).
Puerto Rico could receive similar amounts, with some localized areas possibly experiencing up to 15 cm of rainfall.
As of 1500 GMT, the storm’s core was situated approximately 225 kilometers (140 miles) to the north of the northern Leeward Islands and about 1,350 kilometers (840 miles) south of Bermuda, according to the NHC.
The agency reported that Jerry's highest continuous wind speeds remain near 85 kilometers per hour (53 miles per hour), with storm-force winds reaching up to 295 kilometers (183 miles) eastward from the storm’s center.
The National Hurricane Center added that Jerry’s strength is not expected to change significantly in the coming days, as it continues its northwest path at a pace of 26 kph (16.2 mph).
